Few things are as tedious as organizing a large heap of files into folders and sub-folders. You only need to look in your Downloads folder, and you will know the feeling right away. If you don't want to spend hours sorting your files, you can get Alternate Archiver and let it do everything for you. Though its name can make you think of a compression utility, this lightweight application is capable of sorting your files according to various criteria. Instead of having multiple windows on your screen and looking at each file separately, you can let this user-friendly piece of software take care of everything in just a few seconds.

Alternate Archiver is distributed as a freeware application, and it works on numerous Windows platforms, from Win 98 to Win 10. It comes in a small package, and it can be installed in under a minute, without making any complicated settings. Furthermore, you don't have to meet any special requirements, and you won't notice any impact on your computer's performance.

Using the application is quite easy. You basically have to dump your files onto its user interface and decide how to sort them. Regardless of their format or size, once your files are all imported, you can access a renaming tool, a date changer, an archiver and others. Each tool places a wide range of options at your disposal. For example, the renaming tool lets you completely change the name of your files, add single or multi-digit numbers to the names, include dates, old names, folder names, change the letter case and much more.

When you target a folder and list its files on the main interface, all the contents will appear in a disorganized heap, just like in the folder, but you can use the column header to sort the files by name type, date and other criteria. Of course, you can also use the software's main function, to organize your data in separate folders, and it has to be mentioned that Alternate Archiver is quite flexible in this regard. For example, you can set the application to create sub-folders for each file creation year, month day, and even for each hour, minute and second. You can also sort your files in different folders based on their type, name or original folder, and make other fine tweaks.

Alternate Archiver comes with pretty much everything you need to organize your files properly. The best part is that it gives you many little features that make things a bit more convenient. The possibility of filtering the imported files by name or extension is a good example since it gives you the possibility of manipulating files with a specific name or extension without affecting the others. Everything on the interface is easy to find and use, so you won't have too much trouble, even if you're not that experienced with specialized software applications.

With Alternate Archiver, a disorganized heap of files can be turned into a well-managed library in just a few moments.

Pros

You can sort your files by various criteria. The software places a good number of tools and options at your disposal. It's free, it doesn't use too many resources, and you can have it up and running in no time.

Cons

Though it's easy to use, the software could explain some options a little better.
